"Knight and Draper's Therapeutic Modalities is the modalities text that combines both evidence-based medicine with anecdotal tradition and experience - hence the Art and Science. While Draper and Knight are widely known and respected researchers (commonly referred to as Dr. Cold and Dr. Heat, respectively to indicate they modality they research) they acknowledge there are often instances where there is simply not enough research to base use on scientific fact. In those cases practitioners are required to rely on experience and tradition. Beyond the Art and Science elements, what makes this book unique is how it applicable beyond the Athletic Training market. The market leader, Starkey/Therapeutic Modalities (FA Davis) sells only into the AT market. However, like Clarkson's Musculoskeletal Assessment, Draper and Knight also sells into PT and OT markets (one of the Amazon reviewers is a PT student). This is possible because the book introduces the most common therapeutic modalities used by all rehab specialists - athletic trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors and occupational therapists - not just athletic trainers. The foundational chapters lay the groundwork for using therapeutic modalities, specifically Evidence-based practice, Inflammation, swelling and edema, the healing process and understanding pain across all rehab specialties. Same goes for the modalities found in the treatment section of the book. Nitrogen vapor cryotherapy, BEMER, and Positional Release Therapy are not AT-specific therapies and are not found in any of the AT-only texts. Throughout the text the authors utilize a pedagogy that supports a kinesthetic learning style. Strategy was implemented because the core rehabs disciplines attract those type of kinesthetic (hands-on) learners. Thus we include several case studies and hands-on, step-by-step chapters and labs to cover the kinesthetic learners. For example, after each chapter on a modality (or several modalities) there is a section that illustrates that step-by-step procedure for using the modality"--
